Confronting Balak at Asteroid X57 in Mass Effect Legendary Edition
Upon arriving at Asteroid X57 in Mass Effect Legendary Edition, you must act quickly to disable the thrusters that are careening the object towards the planet below. After shutting down three of them, you'll face off against the Batarian mastermind behind the plot: Balak.
Understanding Balak's Motivations
Balak seeks justice against the humans who have wronged his people, the Batarians, and wishes to see a human face punishment. However, before you can apprehend him, he presents you with an ultimatum: stop him or let him go to save the hostages. This decision will have far-reaching consequences, so it's essential to consider your options carefully.
X57 Decisions in Mass Effect Legendary Edition
Should You Attack Balak?
If you choose to attack Balak, you'll receive 25 Renegade points, but the hostages will not survive. You'll need to engage in a firefight with Balak and his guards, which is a relatively straightforward battle. Upon defeating Balak, you can either end his life personally or allow the Alliance Military to take him into custody.
However, killing Balak will result in dire consequences, including the death of the hostages and a memorial service on Terra Nova. Simon will also react angrily to your decision, making it more challenging to acquire armor and tools from him. Furthermore, a different Batarian character will replace Balak in a future mission if you choose to eliminate him.
Should You Let Balak Go and Save the Hostages?
If you decide to let Balak escape to focus on saving the hostages, you'll receive 25 Paragon points. Balak will flee, and you'll need to disarm the bombs scattered throughout the area, all while navigating through a room filled with security drones. Once you've disarmed the bombs, you can ensure the hostages' safety and speak with Kate Bowman, who assisted you in the operation.
If you choose to spare Balak's life, you'll hear news reports in Mass Effect 2 discussing the Asteroid X57 incident. Additionally, if you complete the mission and save the hostages, you'll receive an email from Bowman. In Mass Effect 3, there's a mission called Batarian Codes that features Balak if you spared his life. If you again choose to show mercy to Balak in this mission, he will reluctantly pledge the Batarian fleet to the war effort.
- Attacking Balak will result in the death of the hostages and provide Renegade points.
- Letting Balak go will save the hostages and provide Paragon points.
- Depending on your decision, the consequences will affect future missions and characters in the Mass Effect series.
