Is PlateUp Cross-Platform? Can You Play with Friends on Different Consoles?
With the release of PlateUp! on various consoles, including Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PS5, as well as PC, players now have multiple options to choose from. However, one crucial factor to consider, especially for those interested in multiplayer, is cross-platform play.
What is Cross-Platform Play and Why Does it Matter?
Cross-platform play allows players to play with friends across different platforms. For instance, if you're playing PlateUp! on Nintendo Switch, cross-platform play would enable you to play online with friends who are playing on Xbox, PS5, or PC.
Does PlateUp Have Cross-Platform Play?
Unfortunately, the answer is no. PlateUp! does not currently offer cross-platform play. While you can access online multiplayer mode or play in-person co-op, you won't be able to play online with friends on different consoles.
This is because PlateUp! relies on the console's online servers, rather than its own. As a result, if you're playing on Nintendo Switch, you'll only be able to connect with other Nintendo Switch players.
However, There's a Small Exception
If you're playing via Xbox Game Pass on an Xbox console and your friend is playing the PC version through Game Pass, you will be able to connect. This is because multiplayer mode is hosted through Xbox's servers. However, this is the only exception, and you won't be able to access online co-op with anyone using a different console.
Will PlateUp Ever Support Cross-Platform Play?
While cross-platform play wasn't a primary focus for the console development of PlateUp!, it's something that may be explored in the future. In a Reddit comment, the developer mentioned that they would like to consider crossplay in the future, but were focused on developing the console version of the game before launch.
The main reason for not emphasizing crossplay during the console development was the differences between the PC version and the various consoles. However, this doesn't rule out the possibility of cross-platform play in the future.
What Does This Mean for Players?
For now, it looks like you'll have to stick to online multiplayer with friends on the same console or invite them over for a couch co-op session. While there's no confirmation on when or if cross-platform play will be added to PlateUp!, the developer's willingness to consider it in the future is a positive sign.
