What to Do with the Newborn Mind Flayer in Baldur's Gate 3
As you explore the sunny landscapes of Baldur's Gate 3 after the darkness of Act 2, you may stumble upon some random encounters, including a newborn Mind Flayer in the Abandoned Windmill northeast of Rivington's entrance.
Discovering the Newborn Mind Flayer
Upon entering the windmill, you'll find a wooden hatch leading to an underground area where the newborn Mind Flayer resides. Instead of finding treasure, you'll encounter a sleepy, newborn Mind Flayer. The Emperor will prompt you to consume the Mind Flayer to harness its power, but you'll have to decide whether to spare its life.
Attacking the Newborn Mind Flayer
If you choose to attack the newborn Mind Flayer, it will wake up and ask to have a word with you before engaging in a fight. You can choose to attack it again to start the battle. After defeating the newborn Mind Flayer, you'll receive the Mind Flayer brain, which you can consume to level up your Mind Flayer skill tree powers. Additionally, you'll find the Ring of Truthfulness on the Mind Flayer's corpse, which gives you advantage on Insight checks.
Talking to the Newborn Mind Flayer
If you decide to spare the newborn Mind Flayer's life, you can choose to have a conversation with it. The Mind Flayer will explain its transformation and mention its hunger. You can then choose to tell the Mind Flayer to find its own meal or embark on a quest to fetch it some meat.
The Consequences of Your Choice
If you let the newborn Mind Flayer live, it will attack a couple having a picnic nearby, killing the woman before floating off to find more human food. On the other hand, if you choose to fetch the Mind Flayer some meat, you can find a meal for it anywhere. Simply kill someone, put their corpse in your pocket, and bring it back to the newborn Mind Flayer. In exchange, the Mind Flayer will give you the Ring of Truthfulness.
Should You Spare the Newborn Mind Flayer's Life?
While sparing the newborn Mind Flayer's life may seem like a noble choice, it's essential to consider the consequences. The Mind Flayer will likely go on to kill more people, making it arguably better to kill it and receive the rewards. Ultimately, the decision is yours to make, and you'll have to live with the consequences.
